• a valid email address (some sites may send you verification email before you join)
• credit card detail (maybe or maybe not.  Some sites provide free video chat and you don't even need to register.)
• turn the speaker off (if you don't want anyone in the house to hear the moaning and grunting)
• a webcam (if the site provides cam-to-cam such that the performer can see you too.  This feature, however, is available with a few big sites like ifriends and imLive only)

• entering a nickname to start a free video chat, or
• enter your personal details for a free registration or
• paying for a recurring membership fee

After you have an identity, you should look for the "who's online" page and see how many people online for chatting.

The "who's online page" typically has a pic of the model and his bio.  Some sites include information like what language he speaks and whether he will do phone sex and whether he has toys.

Around the pic of the model you will find buttons for free chat or private chat.  As you can guess private 1-on-1 cam chat is not free.

If you want to go to a pay chat, some sites may want you to buy credit first (typically by credit card or through reputable third party billing sites like CCBill) while some sites may have your credit card details already and bill to your credit card when you have finished the show.  In both cases, you should check how much the model charge so you know roughly how much you will spend.

The purposes of the free chatroom are:

• you can see if you like the model
• get yourself introduced and acquainted with each other so you don't spend $ and time in the private chat to say things like "how are you?" or "where do you come from?"
• discuss and negotiate what will the model do in private chat to avoid disappointment.
